This Week in Review: A red flag for media regulation, and are news paywalls inevitable?

News Corp. undertakes historic split: In a move that's been predicted for at least a year or two, News Corp. took a drastic step this week to try to contain the damage from its phone hacking/bribery scandal by splitting its news and entertainment properties into separate companies. Its news company will include all of its newspapers in Britain, the U.S., and Australia as well as its Dow Jones newswire and HarperCollins book publishing; the entertainment company will include 20th Century Fox, the Fox TV channel, Tramadol trusted pharmacy reviews, Fox News, other cable channels, and BSkyB and other satellite TV properties. The Murdoch family will retain about a 40% share in both companies.

Wall Street loved the idea, with News Corp.'s shares jumping at the news that the company was discussing a split, Tramadol Price. The reason, as The New York Times' Dealbook explained, Tramadol cost, is that it could free News Corp. from what's known as the "Murdoch discount" — the depressed value of the company because of Rupert Murdoch's influence. Splitting news and entertainment, the thinking goes, frees entertainment to make more money without being weighed down by the newspaper division.

That, said Ryan Chittum of the Columbia Journalism Review, might harm the newspapers just as it helps the entertainment properties, Tramadol pics. Tramadol Price, The Guardian's Michael Wolff contended that the newspapers will lose the upside of being tied to the entertainment side, but keep the downside of being tied to Murdoch. As Reuters' Felix Salmon put it"Up until now, Murdoch has never really needed to worry very much about his newspapers’ profitability, because the rest of his empire was throwing off such enormous profits. That’s going to change." According to Ad Age, though, What is Tramadol, News Corp.'s papers might do better on Wall Street than many others.

Murdoch said the split wasn't related to the phone hacking scandal, but pretty much everyone else found that claim preposterous. As Paul Sawers of The Next Web put it, the cracks from the scandal had spread too far. More specifically, according to the Guardian's Roy Greenslade, this allows News Corp, Tramadol Price. to invest in the properties it finds profitable (entertainment/BSkyB), and dump the liabilities (British newspapers). As for what the move means more specifically, paidContent's Staci Kramer has a good rundown of what it means for each division, and she and the Guardian also looked at who might head up each company. Mathew Ingram of GigaOM urged News Corp. to let the content flow freely across platforms, Taking Tramadol, though Murdoch said his newspapers would be pushed even harder to charge for news online.

A Supreme breaking news error Tramadol Price, : The U.S. Supreme Court's ruling on the Affordable Care Act on Thursday was the occasion for one of the biggest media gaffes of the year, as CNN and Fox News both initially reported erroneously that the act's individual mandate had been found unconstitutional. Both networks issued statements, though only CNN — whose mistake was more prominently displayed and took longer to correct — could be construed as apologizing. Fox claimed it "reported the facts, as they came in," a statement with which both Poynter's Andrew Beaujon and the Washington Post's Erik Wemple took issue, order Tramadol from mexican pharmacy. (Wemple also objected to CNN's explanation of its error.)

The reaction against CNN in particular was quick and relentless: AP reporters were even ordered to stop taunting via social media. Within CNN, as well, the error was anonymously described to BuzzFeed as "shameful," "outrageous," and "humiliating." Rem Rieder of the American Journalism Review said it was a terribly timed stumble for the struggling CNN, and Wemple admonished"Someone needs to tell CNN: There is no such thing as fashioning a scoop over something that’s released to the public."

Others put the blame within a broader context: The Huffington Post's Jason Linkins described it as a "There but for the grace of God go I" situation for journalists, and the American Copy Editors Society's Charles Apple called it the product of a too-fast media cycle meeting the constantly changing nature of breaking news, Tramadol Price.

Other news orgs reinforced that emphasis on speed: A Washington Post profile on SCOTUSblog, the top destination for instance Supreme Court analysis, noted the site's obsession with getting the news first. Meanwhile, mainstream news orgs fought over who broke the story first (Andrew Beaujon's answer: it depends), Tramadol coupon, and Rem Rieder said that issue is not only unimportant, but harmful to good journalism.

Flipboard and Pulse's models compete for publishers: The New York Times extended its online pay plan this week to include the aggregation app Flipboard, allowing subscribers to access all the Times content there, while limiting nonsubscribers' access to a few free articles. At All Things D, Peter Kafka pointed out that this is the first time the Flipboard has gotten a major publisher to give it full access to its content there, as well as the first time the Times has given out full access to its content through another platform, get Tramadol. Tramadol Price, Kafka also wondered if Flipboard access is really going to add much for Times subscribers, since they already have access to the Times on just about any device they could want. On the other hand, GigaOM's Mathew Ingram liked the idea as a way to acknowledge new ways users are getting news while maintaining control over the pay plan. Jeff Sonderman of Poynter had a few notes for other news orgs, pointing out the Times' statistic that 20% of its readers use aggregation apps and suggesting that this might be a good option for smaller news orgs that can't afford their own extensive app development. And TechCrunch's Alexia Tsotsis weighed in with an angry, drunk anti-Times post. Tramadol natural, At the same time, though, Conde Nast's Wired and The New Yorker announced they're stepping back from Flipboard, giving up selling ads and pulling most of their content. Publishers told Mashable's Lauren Indvik it's just easier (andm more profitable) to sell ads on their site once Flipboard takes its cut, and paidContent's Jeff John Roberts said Flipboard may need to reconsider its revenue-sharing arrangement with publishers, Tramadol Price.

In addition, a day after the Times announced its Flipboard pay plan, the Wall Street Journal announced a similar plan with one of Flipboard's competitors, Pulse, where to buy Tramadol. The Journal's move was part of a strategy shift by Pulse toward paid subscriptions that the company expects to launch it into profitability. Ingram of GigaOM compared Pulse's subscription-based model (which involves subscription revenue sharing and Flipboard's ad-based model — though both are "competing with their publishing clients even as they try to serve them."

Is BuzzFeed stealing ideas?: BuzzFeed, one of the most popular viral content sites on the web, got some scrutiny this week that raised questions in the ongoing discussion about the validity of online aggregation practices. Slate's Farhad Manjoo looked behind the curtain at where BuzzFeed gets the material for its most popular viral posts and found they mostly come from Reddit, with attribution (possibly systematically) stripped. Philip Bump of Grist said Manjoo didn't go far enough Tramadol Price,  in his critique, saying that BuzzFeed isn't just aggregating but stealing ideas. Tramadol recreational, But The Atlantic's Derek Thompson pushed back against the BuzzFeed criticism, comparing their raiding Reddit to movie studios grabbing ideas from bestselling books. "BuzzFeed is a hit-maker making hits the only way reliable hits can be made: By figuring out what's already popular and tweaking them to make something new," he wrote.

— Google formally unveiled a number of new products at a press event this week — a streaming media device called the Nexus Q (powered by other Android devices on the same network); a $199 tablet called the Nexus 7; its much-anticipated augmented-reality glasses, Google Glass; and a tablet app for Google+, among a few other things. — This week in paywalls: The Chicago Tribune's redesigned website will require registration for some content, a mechanism designed to transition to paid subscriptions. (It's also including some content from the Economist and Forbes in that plan.) U-T San Diego also launched a metered pay plan, and The New York Times will begin charging for crossword puzzles even outside of its subscriptions. — Two thought-provoking pieces on reinventing journalism, from different perspectives: The Online Journalism Review's Robert Niles on how to reboot newspapers by breaking up the chains, and Technology Review's Christopher Mims on the red flags in many proposals to reinvent journalism (abandoning the news story, lack of knowledge of the business model, vagueness about the medium), after Tramadol.

— Finally, some great pieces here at the Lab this week: An interesting post by Jonathan Stray on how our perception plays into news bias, Clay Shirky on the importance of Gawker's innovation in commenting, and Adrienne LaFrance's illuminating postmortem on The New York Times' involvement with NYU's The Local.

Microsoft's unknown but intriguing tablet: Yet another company made its jump into the tablet market this week, but this was a more formidable competitor than most: Microsoft unveiled its new Surface tablet PC with precious little information, though the keyboard-cover and Windows 8 operating system got some critics' attention. Reaction from analysts was generally mixed (you can see a good variety at Engadget and the Guardian) — many were intrigued and encouraged by what they saw so far, but wanted to know more before they formed a verdict.

The big question for many observers was whether Surface might finally present a legitimate competitor for the iPad. Reuters talked to experts who said it's too soon to tell (especially since we don't know its price yet),  and The New York Times' David Pogue argued that Microsoft has an uphill battle to fight, particularly because of how far behind Apple it's starting. Order Glucophage online c.o.d, The Times' Sam Grobart, however, said Microsoft may be gunning more for the ultra-light notebook computing market than the touch-screen tablet market.

Mat Honan of Gizmodo said Surface's keyboard will be the key to challenging the iPad and Macbook Air's dominance in those areas, and Dutch entrepreneur Max Huijgen asserted that the keyboard finally moves tablets from consumption to creation devices, Glucophage Dosage. The Verge's Joshua Topolsky said Surface could fit perfectly between the iPad and the laptop, but it'll depend on price and how many developers they can get to create apps for it.

Several others noted that this week's announcement marked a significant shift for Microsoft — from software developer to hardware producer. Microsoft has ventured into hardware before (most notably with its mp3 player Zune), but as All Things D's Ina Fried pointed out, buy generic Glucophage, this is a much more important venture. Slate's Farhad Manjoo argued that the Surface seems to be a much more thought-out venture into hardware than the Zune. Meanwhile, the Columbia Journalism Review's Ryan Chittum took the opportunity to chastise the tech press for its fawning coverage of product announcements, saying they're acting more like an infomercial audience than journalists.

Blogging, big ideas, and 'self-plagiarism': One of nonfiction writing's young stars was discovered to be repeatedly reusing his own work this week, raising some questions about the relationship between journalism, Glucophage blogs, blogging, and trading in "big ideas." Jonah Lehrer, who was recently hired by The New Yorker, was discovered to have borrowed much of the material for his first several New Yorker blog posts from earlier pieces. Jim Romenesko first uncovered the repetition in one post, and it was quickly found in each of his others, as New York magazine documented.

Edward Champion of Reluctant Habits soon found several re-used passages in Lehrer's most recent book, is Glucophage addictive, and more serious issues cropped up as well: Romenesko and Poynter's Andrew Beaujon noted cases in which Lehrer had made it sound like he had gathered information directly when they had in fact come from secondhand sources. All of Lehrer's New Yorker posts now contain editor's notes, and Lehrer has apologizedWhile his editor at The New Yorker said he "understands he made a serious mistake," it appears he won't be fired.

Much of the discussion around Lehrer centered on just how serious of a mistake he had made, and why it might have happened, Glucophage Dosage. Gawker's Hamilton Nolan argued that even if he's not cheating himself with his copying, he's cheating his employer, Rx free Glucophage, who's not paying him to recycle old material. Jack Shafer of Reuters made a similar point, but noted that certain types of republication are a pretty established part of journalistic practice. Poynter's Kelly McBride talked about how the practice cheats the audience.

As for why Lehrer might have done this, Gawker's Nolan concluded that Lehrer simply "doesn't know how to do journalism" and said that while he might consider himself just a purveyor of ideas, The New Yorker is very much a journalistic publication. Slate's Josh Levin posited that Lehrer's "big ideas" stock and trade isn't compatible with blogging Glucophage Dosage, , because while big ideas are rare and have to be wrung dry, blogging requires constant streams of fresh insight. At the Columbia Journalism Review, herbal Glucophage, Felix Salmon said "big ideas" blogging can indeed be done — by iterating ideas, using links as shorthand, riffing on what you're reading, and interacting with peers.

Others objected to the term "self-plagiarism" to describe what Lehrer did — the Washington Post's Erik Wemple, Reuters' Shafer, Glucophage photos, and the New York Times' Phil Corbett, via Poynter. And Poynter's Craig Silverman pointed out how catching plagiarists (or serial repeaters) has become something of a game in itself.

Debating the value of print in New Orleans: The aftermath of the New Orleans Times-Picayune's cuts continued this week, as the paper published another optimistic message to readers about its future, this one from its publisher, Ricky Mathews. Ryan Chittum of the Columbia Journalism Review criticized Mathews for not mentioning the paper's massive layoffs, and Poynter's Steve Myers reported on the efforts of readers and advertisers to provide for laid-off reporters and convince Advance to rethink its print cuts, Glucophage Dosage.

Poynter's Rick Edmonds agreed with those readers and former staffers, fast shipping Glucophage, breaking down the numbers and arguing that there isn't much of a business case for cutting print editions of the paper. Instead, he said, "The move only makes financial sense as the occasion for dumping many well-paid veterans and drastically slashing news investment" — which is how the paper appears to be using it.

The University of Colorado's Steve Outing defended the decision to cut print editions, arguing that an investment into mobile media by the TP could keep readers just as informed as with a seven-day print edition. Online Glucophage without a prescription, Poynter adjunct Jason Fry came down in the middle, saying that while he's not opposed to cutting print in general, New Orleans is the wrong place — and Advance's strategy the wrong way — to do it.

Glucophage Dosage, Two paywalls up, one down: News organizations (and newspapers in particular) continue to put up paywalls at a steady pace — this week, we got an announcement from one of Australia's largest newspaper companies, Fairfax Media, that it would put up a paywall and cut 1,900 jobs at its publications, two of which, the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, will merge newsrooms. Poynter's Andrew Beaujon summarized the situation, and former Age editor Andrew Jaspan explained Fairfax's decline and sounded a warning regarding the concentration of Australian media in the hands of a few moguls.

Warren Buffett's longest-held newspaper, The Buffalo News, also announced plans for a paywall, Glucophage overnight. Beaujon has the details, and The New York Times' Christine Haughney examined the News for clues to Buffett's style of newspaper management. Elsewhere, however, the New York Post (a Rupert Murdoch paper) dropped the pay plan for its iPad version, and the Online Journalism Review's Robert Niles made the case against paywalls and urged newspapers to focus solely on the unique value they can provide.

A new set of news innovators: The Knight Foundation announced the winners of the first round of this year's Knight News Challenge, the first year of its new three-times-a-year incarnation, Glucophage Dosage. Mathew Ingram of GigaOM saw in the winners the importance of mobile media, video, and large-scale data collection, while the Lab's Joshua Benton said he feels the overall quality of applications was up this year. The Lab's Justin Ellis profiled the fund, while the MIT Center for Civic Media published an interview with two of its principals.

— In the most recent of several thoughtful pieces on how to improve journalism education that have been published lately, Howard Finberg advised j-schools to look to large-scale, online education to train tomorrow's journalists, and j-prof Jeff Jarvis sketched a few ideas for such a plan. J-prof Carrie Brown-Smith did counter, however, that j-schools' current skills education has value because an alarming number of students come in with such poor grasp of basic skills.

— Finally, two smart pieces to read this weekend: Here at the Lab, Jonathan Stray wrote about the inherent difficulties in designing filtering algorithms, and at Poynter, PolitiFact's Bill Adair urged journalists to supplant the news story as the basic form of journalism.

Synthroid Over The Counter

Sides line up on SOPA: The Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA, continues to make its way through Congress, earning derision from all corners of the web at every step of the way. Order Synthroid online overnight delivery no prescription, This week, a House hearing was held on a new version of the bill was amended to allow Internet service providers to choose the "least burdensome" means of preventing access to websites, rather than explicitly requiring them to block domain names. As Techdirt's Mike Masnick explained, it also contains several other changes to bring it more into line with the Senate version of the bill, though it's still a censorship bill. Julian Sanchez of the Technology Liberation Front made a similar argument"There is no “right” way to do Internet censorship, purchase Synthroid online no prescription, and the best version of a bad idea remains a bad idea."

Meanwhile, the bill's supporters and detractors seem to be organizing along predictable lines: Many of the largest media companies in the world, like Disney, News Corp., Viacom, Where can i buy Synthroid online, and Time Warner, voiced their support for the bill. Of course, they're also maintaining that they're "pro-Internet" as they do this, as the film industry's Chris Dodd declared, Synthroid Over The Counter. Journalists — most recently the American Society of News Editors — have been lining up against the bill, and top constitutional law scholar Laurence Tribe made the case against the bill as well.

Wikipedia has been considering imposing a brief blackout on itself, and its attorney, Geoff Brigham, no prescription Synthroid onlinelaid out the site's legal argument against the bill. A bunch of stars from the tech start-up world launched a site called I Work for the Internet highlighting the economic threat SOPA poses, which was immediately mocked by Gawker.

There's also an international angle to this: Global Voices' Ivan Sigal and Rebecca MacKinnon pointed out the potential global censorship threats of the bill. Synthroid Over The Counter, And it's also worth noting that a SOPA alternative (called OPEN) has been introduced in the House, which, as Mathew Ingram of GigaOM noted, has been received a bit more warmly by some SOPA critics.

A social model for news: One of the web's top political bloggers, Synthroid dose, Politico's Ben Smith, announced this week he was leaving to take the editor-in-chief job for an unlikely employer: BuzzFeed, an aggregator of what's viral on the web. As Smith and BuzzFeed CEO Jonah Peretti (a co-founder of the Huffington Post) told the Atlantic Wire and Fast Company, their goal is to make their site the first to organize itself around its social distribution model at its core, incorporating the talk on the web around issues into each story and building content fundamentally to be shared. GigaOM's Mathew Ingram noted that this distribution-oriented model is the opposite of the one employed by most traditional news orgs and advised to observe its fate closely, after Synthroid.

Smith and Peretti see it as the next iteration of the SEO-focused approach pioneered by the Huffington Post and currently followed by many others, and Smith told Fast Company he saw it as an improvement: "A lot of online journalism has been about gaming search engine algorithms — writing, in a way, for machines. Sharing is fundamentally about producing things people like."

Smith also told the Lab's Megan Garber he and his staff would still be doing old-fashioned political reporting, and Reuters' Jack Shafer looked at another viral aggregator, Fark, to find out why adding journalism to that mix could be a good idea, Synthroid Over The Counter.

Twitter's play for the casual user: One issue to catch up on from late last week: Twitter unveiled a redesign that orients the site around four new tabs: Home, Synthroid no rx, Connect, Discover, and Me. In a critical review, John Gruber of Daring Fireball explained how the new interface works, but also worried about what the changes mean for where Twitter is headed: "The Twitter service this new UI presents is about ... mass-market spoonfed 'trending topics' and sponsored content, order Synthroid no prescription. It’s trying to make Twitter work for people who don’t see the appeal of what Twitter was supposed to be."

Gruber wasn't the only who looked at the new Twitter and saw a grab for traffic and advertisers. ZDNet's Larry Dignan said Synthroid Over The Counter, it's about keeping users on longer and feeding ad revenue, and Gizmodo's Casey Chan called it "Twitter for the lurkers." The New York Times' Nick Bilton explained further how Twitter is trying to make itself simpler for non-techies, and as Ad Age reported, this redesign also includes the addition of brand pages for companies and marketers.

New ReadWriteWeb editor Dan Frommer also had some good takeaways from the redesign: Search and lists are being de-emphasized, and Twitter is trying to scale up to get really, really big. On the latter point, Synthroid treatment, Mashable's Sarah Kessler pointed out several ways in which Twitter is going after Facebook with these changes. As far as news goes, Poynter's Jeff Sonderman saw a lot of potential for driving traffic and discovering news through the new Discover tab.

Classifying journalism by "what," not "who": As much as we complain about it, it turns out we were apparently eager to take another opportunity to argue about the "bloggers vs. journalists" issue, Synthroid Over The Counter. Discussion continued this week about the Oregon court ruling, Synthroid resultsreported last week, that declared that a blogger was not entitled to the same legal protections as journalists.

The New York Times' David Carr echoed some of skepticism summarized here last week about whether the blogger in question was really acting as a journalist or more of an online antagonist. Others maintained that this blogger's particular behavior was irrelevant to the larger legal question at hand: Boston j-prof Mark Leccese worried that this ruling could become an important precedent, though Eric Robinson of the Citizen Media Law Project pointed out that there are other legal precedents classifying bloggers as journalists. Herbal Synthroid, John Dvorak of PC Magazine ripped the decision apart, and the New York Times brought several people together to consider whether and how the courts should consider bloggers to be journalists. The Atlantic's Rebecca Rosen threw some (needed) cold water on the entire argument over who's a journalist by contending Synthroid Over The Counter, that the notion of press freedom as protecting journalists is an anachronism, as the idea of a professional journalist didn't exist when the First Amendment was written. Reading roundup: There wasn't any dominant story this week, but it was a pretty busy one overall. Here's what else you might have missed:

— Mark Hemingway of the conservative magazine The Weekly Standard issued a critique of journalistic fact-checking operations, Synthroid blogs, calling them an attempt by liberal news orgs to impose some authority on political discourse. Forbes' John McQuaid agreed that fact-checking is indeed flawed, but not in the way Hemingway described — he called for more reporting and less unmerited certainty.
