Glucophage Dosage

Microsoft's unknown but intriguing tablet: Yet another company made its jump into the tablet market this week, but this was a more formidable competitor than most: Microsoft unveiled its new Surface tablet PC with precious little information, though the keyboard-cover and Windows 8 operating system got some critics' attention. Reaction from analysts was generally mixed (you can see a good variety at Engadget and the Guardian) — many were intrigued and encouraged by what they saw so far, but wanted to know more before they formed a verdict.

The big question for many observers was whether Surface might finally present a legitimate competitor for the iPad. Reuters talked to experts who said it's too soon to tell (especially since we don't know its price yet),  and The New York Times' David Pogue argued that Microsoft has an uphill battle to fight, particularly because of how far behind Apple it's starting. Order Glucophage online c.o.d, The Times' Sam Grobart, however, said Microsoft may be gunning more for the ultra-light notebook computing market than the touch-screen tablet market.

Mat Honan of Gizmodo said Surface's keyboard will be the key to challenging the iPad and Macbook Air's dominance in those areas, and Dutch entrepreneur Max Huijgen asserted that the keyboard finally moves tablets from consumption to creation devices, Glucophage Dosage. The Verge's Joshua Topolsky said Surface could fit perfectly between the iPad and the laptop, but it'll depend on price and how many developers they can get to create apps for it.

Several others noted that this week's announcement marked a significant shift for Microsoft — from software developer to hardware producer. Microsoft has ventured into hardware before (most notably with its mp3 player Zune), but as All Things D's Ina Fried pointed out, buy generic Glucophage, this is a much more important venture. Slate's Farhad Manjoo argued that the Surface seems to be a much more thought-out venture into hardware than the Zune. He and Dan Frommer Glucophage Dosage,  of SplatF were excited that Microsoft is finally taking quality hardware into its own hands, as Frommer said: "it sure looks like a better strategy for Microsoft than only trusting the Samsungs of the world to design great Windows tablets, and only trying to generate mobile revenue from Windows sales."

Meanwhile, the Columbia Journalism Review's Ryan Chittum took the opportunity to chastise the tech press for its fawning coverage of product announcements, saying they're acting more like an infomercial audience than journalists.

Blogging, big ideas, and 'self-plagiarism': One of nonfiction writing's young stars was discovered to be repeatedly reusing his own work this week, raising some questions about the relationship between journalism, Glucophage blogs, blogging, and trading in "big ideas." Jonah Lehrer, who was recently hired by The New Yorker, was discovered to have borrowed much of the material for his first several New Yorker blog posts from earlier pieces. Jim Romenesko first uncovered the repetition in one post, and it was quickly found in each of his others, as New York magazine documented.

Edward Champion of Reluctant Habits soon found several re-used passages in Lehrer's most recent book, is Glucophage addictive, and more serious issues cropped up as well: Romenesko and Poynter's Andrew Beaujon noted cases in which Lehrer had made it sound like he had gathered information directly when they had in fact come from secondhand sources. All of Lehrer's New Yorker posts now contain editor's notes, and Lehrer has apologizedWhile his editor at The New Yorker said he "understands he made a serious mistake," it appears he won't be fired.

Much of the discussion around Lehrer centered on just how serious of a mistake he had made, and why it might have happened, Glucophage Dosage. Gawker's Hamilton Nolan argued that even if he's not cheating himself with his copying, he's cheating his employer, Rx free Glucophage, who's not paying him to recycle old material. Jack Shafer of Reuters made a similar point, but noted that certain types of republication are a pretty established part of journalistic practice. As for why Lehrer might have done this, Gawker's Nolan concluded that Lehrer simply "doesn't know how to do journalism" and said that while he might consider himself just a purveyor of ideas, The New Yorker is very much a journalistic publication. Slate's Josh Levin posited that Lehrer's "big ideas" stock and trade isn't compatible with blogging Glucophage Dosage, , because while big ideas are rare and have to be wrung dry, blogging requires constant streams of fresh insight. At the Columbia Journalism Review, herbal Glucophage, Felix Salmon said "big ideas" blogging can indeed be done — by iterating ideas, using links as shorthand, riffing on what you're reading, and interacting with peers.

Others objected to the term "self-plagiarism" to describe what Lehrer did — the Washington Post's Erik Wemple, Reuters' Shafer, Glucophage photos, and the New York Times' Phil Corbett, via Poynter. And Poynter's Craig Silverman pointed out how catching plagiarists (or serial repeaters) has become something of a game in itself.

Debating the value of print in New Orleans: The aftermath of the New Orleans Times-Picayune's cuts continued this week, as the paper published another optimistic message to readers about its future, this one from its publisher, Ricky Mathews. Ryan Chittum of the Columbia Journalism Review criticized Mathews for not mentioning the paper's massive layoffs, and Poynter's Steve Myers reported on the efforts of readers and advertisers to provide for laid-off reporters and convince Advance to rethink its print cuts, Glucophage Dosage.

Poynter's Rick Edmonds agreed with those readers and former staffers, fast shipping Glucophage, breaking down the numbers and arguing that there isn't much of a business case for cutting print editions of the paper. Instead, he said, "The move only makes financial sense as the occasion for dumping many well-paid veterans and drastically slashing news investment" — which is how the paper appears to be using it.

The University of Colorado's Steve Outing defended the decision to cut print editions, arguing that an investment into mobile media by the TP could keep readers just as informed as with a seven-day print edition. Online Glucophage without a prescription, Poynter adjunct Jason Fry came down in the middle, saying that while he's not opposed to cutting print in general, New Orleans is the wrong place — and Advance's strategy the wrong way — to do it.

Glucophage Dosage, Two paywalls up, one down: News organizations (and newspapers in particular) continue to put up paywalls at a steady pace — this week, we got an announcement from one of Australia's largest newspaper companies, Fairfax Media, that it would put up a paywall and cut 1,900 jobs at its publications, two of which, the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, will merge newsrooms. Poynter's Andrew Beaujon summarized the situation, and former Age editor Andrew Jaspan explained Fairfax's decline and sounded a warning regarding the concentration of Australian media in the hands of a few moguls.

Warren Buffett's longest-held newspaper, The Buffalo News, also announced plans for a paywall, Glucophage overnight. Beaujon has the details, and The New York Times' Christine Haughney examined the News for clues to Buffett's style of newspaper management. Elsewhere, however, the New York Post (a Rupert Murdoch paper) dropped the pay plan for its iPad version, and the Online Journalism Review's Robert Niles made the case against paywalls and urged newspapers to focus solely on the unique value they can provide.

A new set of news innovators: The Knight Foundation announced the winners of the first round of this year's Knight News Challenge, the first year of its new three-times-a-year incarnation, Glucophage Dosage. About Glucophage, Here are the six winners, all based on the theme of networks: Behavio, a collective mobile data-sharing service (Lab profileTechcrunch profile); PeepolTV, a livestreamed video collection project; Recovers.org, a disaster recovery organization (Lab profile); Tor Project, an open-source anonymity-aiding initiative (Lab profile); Signalnoi.se, a tool to help newsrooms understand how information moves through social networks (Lab profile, Glucophage pharmacyJournalism.co.uk profile); and Watchup, a video news iPad app (Lab profile).

Mathew Ingram of GigaOM saw in the winners the importance of mobile media, video, and large-scale data collection, while the Lab's Joshua Benton said he feels the overall quality of applications was up this year. The Lab's Justin Ellis profiled the fund, while the MIT Center for Civic Media published an interview with two of its principals.

Reading roundup: Here are the other stories folks in the news-tech world were talking about this week:

— The New York Times announced a partnership Glucophage Dosage,  with BuzzFeed to collaborate on coverage of this year's political conventions, particularly through video. The Washington Post's Erik Wemple looked at what it means for the Times and BuzzFeed, and The Atlantic's Megan Garber said you can expect BuzzFeed's lolcattiest tendencies to be toned down.

— In the most recent of several thoughtful pieces on how to improve journalism education that have been published lately, Howard Finberg advised j-schools to look to large-scale, online education to train tomorrow's journalists, and j-prof Jeff Jarvis sketched a few ideas for such a plan. J-prof Carrie Brown-Smith did counter, however, that j-schools' current skills education has value because an alarming number of students come in with such poor grasp of basic skills.

— Finally, two smart pieces to read this weekend: Here at the Lab, Jonathan Stray wrote about the inherent difficulties in designing filtering algorithms, and at Poynter, PolitiFact's Bill Adair urged journalists to supplant the news story as the basic form of journalism.

Cipro For Sale

The New York Post's iPad block: News Corp. head Rupert Murdoch has developed a reputation for draconian policies toward paid content and the web, and he furthered that pattern this week when News Corp.'s New York Post blocked access to its website from the iPad's Safari browser in an effort to sell more of its iPad apps. A subscription to the app runs $6.99 per month; access to the website would be free.

The reaction on the web was overwhelmingly negative: Tech pioneer Dave Winer accused the Post of "breaking the web," paidContent's Staci Kramer called it "one of the most poorly conceived paywall efforts I’ve come across, buy Cipro from mexico," and business journalist Adam Tinworth called the move "dictatorial." As Kramer and Examiner.com's Michael Santo noted, the Post left plenty of workarounds for users who don't want to pay up, through alternative browsers like Skyfire. Kramer and Engadget's Dana Wollman also suspected that Murdoch is attempting to recreate the Post as an app-based tabloid like his other major effort, Cipro reviews, The Daily. (Both are skeptical about the prospects of that plan.)

News Corp, Cipro For Sale. does have some good news on the iPad front this week, though: The Post and The Daily are the two highest-grossing publishing apps on the iPad, ranking well ahead of the next-most-lucrative apps — two comic-book apps and Conde Nast's New Yorker and Wired.

Poynter's Regina McCombs talked to three other iPad app publishers — CNN, the Greensboro (N.C.) News & Record, Cipro trusted pharmacy reviews, and Better Homes & Gardens — about how they put their apps together. And the Columbia Journalism Review's Zachary Sniderman compared the iPad's adoption process to that of print periodicals before it: The iPad's sales, he said, "mirror a long trend of historical adoption rates and cultural attitudes: initial enthusiasm for a new platform, Online Cipro without a prescription, slow adoption, and then gradually increasing sales as the population gets habituated to using the new technology."

A fresh round of news innovation: This week was a big one in news innovation, as the Knight Foundation (one of the Lab's funders) announced the 16 winners of the last round of its five-year Knight News Challenge competition. The Lab's Joshua Benton gave a good annotated roundup of the winning entries, which will get a total of $4.7 million: There are a few names many people will recognize, including former New York Times/ProPublica project DocumentCloud, Cipro images, the AP's (and the Lab's) Jonathan Stray, and the crisis text-mapping service Ushahidi. Cipro For Sale, I would expect profiles of several of the winning projects over the next week or so, and the Lab's Justin Ellis provided the first with a look at the Chicago Tribune's PANDA, which aims to help newsrooms analyze data more easily. GigaOM's Mathew Ingram noticed the data journalism theme running through the winning entries, and elsewhere, Where can i buy cheapest Cipro online, the Daily Dot's Nicholas White opined on the importance of data in journalism.

Benton's post also included a glance at what's next for the News Challenge, as well as highlights of what has and hasn't gone well over the News Challenge's short history from a recently released internal review. Some of the main challenges: Underestimated difficulty of citizen journalism and news game projects, problems with accurate cost budgeting, and a slow timetable, Cipro forum. Poynter's Jeff Sonderman also looked back at some of the lessons learned from the News Challenge.

The Knight Foundation also announced a three-year, $3.76 million investment in MIT's Center for Future Civic Media, which named Berkman Center researcher Ethan Zuckerman its new director, Cipro For Sale. The Lab's Andrew Phelps talked to Zuckerman about where the center is headed, and Zuckerman looked at his goals in a post of his own. Two legal wins for aggregators: Rulings were handed down this week in two cases that probably only media-law nerds have following, but both have big implications for online news aggregation and link journalism. In the first case, a federal court ruled that a financial site can publish analysts' stock tips immediately, a blow to a legal principle called the "hot news doctrine" that protects certain facts ("hot news") from being republished for a short period of time. This was one of those rulings where everyone declares victory: The court actually upheld the validity of the hot news doctrine in the Internet/aggregation era, but said it didn't apply in this case — the analysts are newsmakers and the website is the news breaker, the judge wrote. As Dealbook noted, Cipro pictures, the lawyer for Google and Twitter (who filed anti-hot news doctrine briefs) called it "a great decision for the free flow of information in the new media age," while the pro-hot news AP called it "a victory for the news media and the public." But as paidContent's Joe Mullin argued, it looks as though this decision will ultimate weaken the hot news doctrine.

In the other case, Where to buy Cipro, the copyright enforcement firm Righthaven had its lawsuit on behalf of the Las Vegas Review-Journal dismissed. Righthaven had sued a message-board user for reposting a 19-paragraph Review-Journal editorial, but the judge ruled that the posting was protected under fair use because the editorial only contained five paragraphs of purely original opinions and because it was posted for noncommercial reasons.

A renewed debate over anonymity: There have been a handful of streams of discussion regarding anonymity online over the past few weeks that converged a bit this week, and I thought it might be helpful to summarize a couple of them briefly for you. Two weeks ago, a supposed lesbian blogger in Syria was unmasked as a middle-aged American grad student, prompting thoughtful responses from people like the Berkman Center's Ethan Zuckerman and on the role of participatory media and the Guardian's Dan Gillmor and the Berkman Center's Jillian York on the continued need for anonymity, Cipro For Sale.

And last week, discount Cipro, a couple photographed kissing in the streets amid riots in Vancouver was identified online and making the mainstream-media rounds within days, prompting questions about the end of anonymity by writers like the New York Times' Brian Stelter and Salon's Drew Grant. Meanwhile, former NPR ombudsman Alicia Shepard decried anonymous online commenting, Cipro maximum dosage, calling it "faux democracy" and urging news organizations to require commenters to use their real names.

GigaOM's Mathew Ingram drew on several of those developments to echo Gillmor's and York's defenses of anonymity, arguing that it's been a key part of healthy democracy, allowing people to speak to the powerful without fear of reprisal. — Outgoing New York Times executive editor Bill Keller, who's done a fair amount of Twitter-tweaking over the past month or so, gave an interview to Reuters in which he said the idea that he's opposed to social media is a misconception. But sociologist Zeynep Tufekci took issue with his idea that social media use leads to less time with "real-life" friends, and when Keller asked for evidence, she let him have it. — This Week in AOL: Two more former employees gave their own horror stories about working there — one a writer, the other from sales. AOL CEO Tim Armstrong also said he's considering paid content as part of the company's continued revamp, the Columbia Journalism Review's Ryan Chittum pondered the AOL Way and the journalistic "hamster wheel," and Poynter's Steve Myers said comparisons between the Huffington Post and the New York Times are unfounded, Cipro dangers.

— Another potential player in the ongoing long-form nonfiction renaissance, Byliner, launched this week. The Lab and Poynter ran previews.

— Finally, the interesting pieces on the FCC's recent report on the future of local news continue to trickle out. Here's a pointed analysis by the folks at Free Press and a two-part Columbia Journalism Review interview with the report's lead writer, Steven Waldman.

Tramadol Dosage

The FTC's last round of input: The U.S. Federal Trade Commission wrapped up its series of forums on journalism and public policy Tuesday, and this forum got quite a bit more attention than the others — partly because it's the last one, and partly because the FTC released its draft of possible policy proposals a few weeks ago, which gave people something concrete to pick apart.

Before the forum, Tramadol use, The New York Times' Jeremy Peters and TBD's Steve Buttry both gave good summaries of what various people are saying about the issue, and Save the News' Fiona Morgan gave a helpful, detailed description of what went on at the forum itself. As for the FTC's final report due out this fall, Poynter's Rick Edmonds and Bloomberg Businessweek's Olga Kharif both wrote that we're unlikely to see any proposals for significant government intervention in the news business. Edmonds offers a handful of reasons that the idea has fallen out of favor: Newspapers' financial fortunes have improved lately, we've seen an explosion of strongly backed digital journalism experiments, Tramadol wiki, the government might not be able to do it well, and news organizations themselves aren't sure what they want from Uncle Sam. Both Edmonds and Kharif also noted that Congress won't be willing to be seen as bailing out another for-profit industry.

A few more voices — media economics professor Robert Picard, TBD's Mandy Jenkins and conservative Denver Post columnist David Harsanyi — joined the anti-subsidy chorus this week, and the Times' Eric Pfanner provided some evidence to back them up, pointing out that countries with the largest direct subsidies for newspapers also have the lowest newspaper readership, Tramadol Dosage. (He also noted the U.S. media's extreme reliance on advertising compared with the rest of the world.)

Other folks offered a few ideas of what policy proposals they'd like to see the FTC endorse. Edmonds wants to see nonprofits allowed to accept advertising, Buy Tramadol from mexico, j-prof C.W. Anderson says public policy has a role in "fostering an entrepreneurial, innovative, reinvented journalistic sphere," Salon's Dan Gillmor stumps for open broadband subsidies, and Save the News' Josh Stearns lists five ideas he wants endorsed. Tramadol Dosage, The themes that run across several of those people's proposals are clear: Net neutrality, expanded broadband, open government data, and encouragement for innovation, rather than protection for traditional media businesses.

Google News goes human: One low-key but potentially significant development from late last week: As the Lab's Megan Garber reported, after Tramadol, Google News began an experiment called Editors' Picks, in which editors from partner news organizations like the BBC and the Washington Post curate lists of news articles to go along with Google's algorithm-run selections. Garber notes what a shift this is from Google's historical approach to news aggregation and ties it to the quest for serendipity: "This is one way of replicating the offline experience of serendipity-via-bundling within the sometimes scattered experience of online news consumption," she says.

GigaOM's Mathew Ingram saw in the project a similar sign of a shift toward human-powered news aggregation at Google, No prescription Tramadol online, though he noted that Google has tried numerous news-related experiments that never caught on. That's exactly what a Google spokesperson told paidContent's Staci Kramer, and both sites mentioned Google's ill-fated commenting experiment as an example.

Still, Mashable's Vadim Lavrusik loved this idea, making a case for the value of human editors in making sure that people are reading what they need to know online as well as what they want to know, Tramadol Dosage. In other Google News news, its creator, Krishna Bharat, gave a long interview in which he discussed its role in journalism and his idea of what the future of journalism might look like, buy Tramadol without prescription.

Murdoch picks up some paid-content pieces: Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. continued its long, steady march toward a paid-news future with a few small but potentially important moves this week: It bought the Skiff mobile software platform from the newspaper chain Hearst — not the Skiff e-reader itself, though it seems they're working on that — invested in Journalism Online, Steve Brill's news paid-content venture, and bid to take full control of British Sky Broadcasting, Europe's largest for-pay broadcaster.

Hollywood Reporter's Andrew Wallenstein called the first two moves huge news for the digital news business, arguing that Murdoch is setting the standard for the way everyone else does business online. "This is about laying the groundwork for the very process by which people pay for that news; namely, the device they consume it on and the virtual storefront that handles the payment, is Tramadol safe," he wrote. Tramadol Dosage, And with BSkyB's digital music and broadband services, it looks like Murdoch's hoping to add another major asset in his plans to find new ways to get people to pay for not only news, but digital entertainment media as well.

A theory of the political press defined: If you've been following NYU professor Jay Rosen on Twitter or reading his blog for any length of time, you've probably absorbed a general sense of his guiding philosophy about the American political press. But this week he posted the definitive explanation of that philosophy, which is most simply that political journalists' prevailing ideology is one of false equivalency between two sides of political extremists, Tramadol no prescription, while they (and their favorite politicians) stand at the sane, savvy, skeptical center. It's obviously just one critic's opinion, but it's a remarkably helpful frame to help interpret what the Washington press corps values and why it does what it does.

There's some fascinating discussion about Rosen's ideas in the lengthy comments of his post, and he got a few thoughtful responses elsewhere, as well, Tramadol no rx. The Atlantic's Conor Friedersdorf agreed with the main thrust of Rosen's argument, though he challenged the assertion that political journalists are "big believers in the law of unintended consequences" who don't pay much attention to the direct consequences of public policy. The Economist likewise endorses the post but counters that Rosen's concepts of "he said, she said journalism" and "the sphere of deviance" are at odds, Tramadol Dosage. Over at Slate, Tom Scocca affirms a point of Rosen's about journalists' disregard for street protests, and Australian journalist Jonathan Holmes adapted the concept to the Australian media.
